Longevity
Annual service & why it doubles lifespan
Skipped maintenance is the #1 cause of premature tankless failure. Puget Sound water is favorable, but not scale-free — every unit still needs annual attention:
- Descale flush — food-grade citric acid (preferred) or white vinegar through service (isolation) valves for 45–60 minutes, followed by fresh-water flush. Restores heat-exchanger efficiency, extends life to 20+ years.
- Inlet screen — pull, rinse, reinstall. Blocked screen causes low-flow and no-ignition faults.
- Air intake filter — vacuum every 6 months, replace annually. Common failure point in utility rooms shared with a clothes dryer or in dusty crawlspaces.
- Condensate neutralizer media — inspect annually, replace at 12–24 months or when effluent pH drops below 5.5.
- Combustion analysis — measure O₂, CO, and stack temp every 2 years. Confirms burner is tuned and vent is clear.
- Firmware / control-board updates — Navien and Rinnai push meaningful firmware updates. We check version at every visit.
Every unit we install includes full-port isolation valves and a first-year descale at no charge. Our annual service program covers all of the above at a flat rate.
